Moms and Irony

Thursday, August 11, 2011

See this one floating around FB quite a bit lately:

What my Mom taught me:
Religion - "You better pray that comes out of the carpet"
Logic - "Because I said so, that's why"
Irony - "Keep crying and I'll give you something to cry about"
Wisdom - "When you get to my age you'll understand"
Justice - "One day you'll have kids, I hope they turn out just like you!!"

What's funny to me about this is that either:

  • people complain about this behavior from their own parents, but then behave the same way toward their kids
or
  • people post this as some wistful reminiscence of how wise, just, and logical parents were "back in the good old days," when in reality it's a bunch of authoritarian nonsense that no responsible adult would ever lay on a kid.
